Start a 3D Modelling Business

3D Modelling is the process of developing a mathematical representation of any surface of an object in three dimensions via specialised software. The product is called a 3D model and the person who works with 3D models may be referred to as a 3D artist.

3D models is used in various instances: movies, games and can even be physically produced using 3D printers.

3D modelling is a great side business, it can be run from home and computers have been modernized to the point where expensive equipment is no longer necessary. And that brings us to an important aspect of this business: 3D graphics software. Yes, most commercial 3D graphics software is expensive and while most do have cheaper “student” version it can also be cost prohibitive. But there is a  free and capable software called “Blender 3D

Learning 3D skills is the most important aspect of this business, admittedly this business is not for everybody and some might find the learning curve to be too great (or too time consuming), but it is a great skill to have and those willing to put in the effort will be rewarded both creatively and commercially.

If you already have a computer there is a way to cheaply learn this business using Blender 3D which is free and an online course called “Complete Blender Creator: Learn 3D Modelling for Beginners” from the course description: Use Blender to create beautiful 3D models for video games, 3D printing, house design etc. No prior knowledge required.

Marketing your services

Once you’ve mastered the skill side the next part is marketing your services. There is another online course called “Running a 3D Modeling/Animation Business – Turning your talent in 3D into an income for you is possible as a freelancer or (even better) as a small business owner”

The main thing is making money. There are a few general marketplaces you can list on such as fiverr and Upwork then there are more specialized marketplaces such as one that link 3D developers for various industries such as game programmers looking to connect with a 3D developer to make the characters reality. Like any creative business you will need a portfolio of your work to showcase your skills.

To get started, when you practicing you will obviously create some models, then use those models to showcase your work on cheaper platforms where the standard is not very high (such as fiverr) while you hone your skills, as you grow your skill and portfolio so you can move to platforms where you can make more money.
